WHEN: SATURDAY, FEB. 16 from Noon to 2pm

WHERE: ONCE Somerville

Over the last couple of decades, Somerville has started turning into what media researchers call a “news desert”—a municipality lacking enough news outlets to properly cover all relevant political, social, and cultural developments.

To improve Somerville news coverage, DigBoston newspaper in association with the Somerville Media Center, The Welcome Project, Community Action Agency of Somerville, Mystic Tenants Association, Somerville Homeless Coalition, Winter Hill Neighborhood Association, Scout Somerville, New England Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists, Artisan’s Asylum, Vernon Street Studios, Brickbottom Artists Association, Washington Street gallery and studios, Theatre@First, Post-Meridian Radio Players, Tufts Housing League, and the Boston Institute for Nonprofit Journalism is organizing a Somerville Community Summit on Saturday, February 16 from 12 noon to 2pm at [NEW LOCATION] ONCE Somerville, 156 Highland Ave, Somerville, MA 02143.

The event is aimed at bringing area journalists together with Somerville residents to discuss issues and happenings that need coverage by local news media.

The convening media organizations will give a brief presentation to explain the background of the event, review some ground rules for a fruitful conversation, and then open up the floor.

Our hope is that the summit will result in a wave of news articles and videos about Somerville—and the formation of lasting relationships between journalists and residents.

Save the date, and spread the word!
