Major news outlets are not the only places to start your career as a journalist. Join publishers and reporters from around New England to hear about job prospects with the local independent press—then chat with the speakers and several other independent publishers plus fellow student journalists in a “Career Day” networking session (be sure to bring some resumes). Internship opportunities will also be discussed!
Schedule:
11:30 a.m., Conference opens
Noon, Keynote speech: Lara Salahi, award-winning journalist and Endicott College journalism professor
12:30 p.m., Main Panel: Careers in the Independent Press. Moderator: Cindy Rodríguez, Emerson College journalism professor and president of the NAHJ NE chapter; Joanna Detz, publisher, ecoRI; Alex Ip, editor-in-chief, the Xylom; Rosanna Marinelli, reporter, El Planeta; and Brian Zayatz, co-editor, the Shoestring (western Mass)
2 p.m., Break
2:15 p.m., “Career Day” networking session featuring several independent publishers
3:45 p.m., Conference concludes
NOTE ON FOOD/DRINK: There are vending machines right outside the lecture hall (C202) where we’re holding the conference. But the BHCC campus cafes are closed on Saturdays. So please eat a big breakfast or early lunch before the conference and bring anything you’d like to eat or drink beyond what you’d expect to find in typical vending machines with you.
Conference co-sponsored by the Society of Professional Journalists New England Pro Chapter, the National Association of Hispanic Journalists New England Chapter, and the Boston Institute for Nonprofit Journalism. Facilities provided gratis by Bunker Hill Community College.
